While healthy and glowing skin can be achieved at home, many people turn to facials when they need some extra help. A basic facial will work to cleanse your pores, exfoliate dead skin cells, and treat common skin problems with a custom mask. Each facial will begin with an esthetician’s consultation to determine the right types of products for your skin type. Once this has been determined, it’s time to sit back, relax and enjoy the treatment. Let’s look at the five main steps of facial therapy below.

Cleaning:

  • The first part of your facial will involve the cleansing of your skin. Your skin care specialist will gently massage your face and neck with a cleanser to remove any initial traces of makeup and dirt. They will then use a soft facial sponge, cloth, or cotton pad to gently remove the cleanser from your face with warm water. This may be a useful step in determining which facial mask to use later on.

Exfoliation:

  • Depending on the type of spa you visit, your aesthetician may work to buff dead skin cells with an exfoliating cream or scrub.

Extractions:

  • The extraction process is performed to help clear any pores that are clogged with excess oil or dead skin cells that may come from blackheads and acne. The extraction is carried out either by hand or with a special metal tool.

Massage:

  • One of the best parts of the facial is the final massage. Most facials have a massage of the face and parts of the upper body. This is used to improve the lymphatic drainage of your body.

Masks:

  • Once you have enjoyed your facial massage, your skincare expert will apply a custom facial mask to your face. You’ll be asked to sit on a mask anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

Your treatment will depend on your type of skin. Just as no two people are the same, no two skin types are the same. When you meet your esthetician, he or she may ask you questions about your skin and any skin sensitivities you may have. Once they have a thorough understanding of your skin and skincare objectives, they will be able to recommend the best type of facial for you. While it’s normal to feel a little discomfort during your facial, it’s important to remember that your complexion may not look picture-perfect right after your appointment. Since the facial involves the process of pulling impurities deep inside your pores, you may experience redness hours after your appointment.

If you’re investing in a facial of good quality, make sure you get the value of your money. You wouldn’t go out and buy a $400 bag and throw it all over the place, would you? No, so when you get a facial, make sure you keep the results. It’s like going to a dentist to clean and brush and floss at home a couple of times a day. You can’t expect the results to last if you go home and sleep in your makeup or wash your soap bar. You need to use a cleanser and moisturizer for your skin type and the season of the year. You’re going to need a guru. That would have been your aesthetician.
